5 Reasons to Experience Family Living in Dayton, OH

Dayton, OH, is one of those quintessential American towns that not only boasts countless activities and events for those looking for family living, but also tight-knit communities that give residents a sense of belonging.

Located in southwestern Ohio and just 54 miles away from Cincinnati, Dayton checks all the boxes for those looking for a family-oriented town. It is not one of those hustling and bustling cities, only accommodating to those with a fast-paced lifestyle. There are many family-friendly places to check out, as well as top-notch school districts and safe neighborhoods.

Let’s explore some of the reasons Dayton is perfect for family living.

Why Dayton is Ideal for Family Living

Dayton is a growing city, full of welcoming communities. If we haven’t convinced you to move to Dayton already, check out why it’s an idyllic community below.

1. Family-Friendly Activities and Events

The downtown area of Dayton has seen a recent revival in festivals, events, and outdoor concerts that are perfect for any member of your family. If outdoor activities are up your alley, take your family to explore the Riverscape. The park sits right next to the banks of the Great Miami River. Not only is it home to bike paths and places to swim, but it also hosts summer concerts and ice skating in the winter. No matter the season, there is something to do in the Riverscape.

The Downtown Dayton Library is a perfect place for you and your family to grab some new books to read. It includes interactive teen, tween, and children’s areas. There are also digital learning tools for kids ages two to eight for your little ones.

If your family enjoys visiting museums and interactive exhibits, head on over to the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in nearby Columbus. Adults and children alike will be amazed by the various exhibits, including a dinosaur gallery, live shows, and space and ocean exhibits. COSI also offers STEM-themed Fortnite camps that encourage learning through play. Your kids will get to participate in science activities and play Fortnite. These camps are perfect for kids ages 10-15 who are interested in STEM and love video games.

2. Education Options

Dayton has a large public school system and also offers private schools and STEM-focused schools for those looking for different options than public schools. No matter what route you want to take for your children’s education, there is an option that will work for you within the city of Dayton.

If your child is a bit older and ready to move on to college, check out Sinclair College. For those students ready to move on to the next phase in their life but not quite ready to leave home, they can explore one of the 246 programs and certifications Sinclair College offers. Their transfer program makes it easy for students to move on to the next phase in their education, which could be the University of Dayton. The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs.

3. Affordable Housing Choices

There are many suburbs scattered around the Dayton area, and the city continues to grow. Residential units are increasing in the downtown area as the city works to add more living units. One of the most popular suburbs to live in is Englewood. It has a good school district and offers bike paths and parks for family enjoyment. Other popular neighborhoods include Bellbrook, Centerville, and Oakwood.

If historical buildings are more your style, many of the older neighborhoods in Dayton have been restored for modern living. Every neighborhood in Dayton features an affordable cost of living, tons of shopping, lots of restaurants, and countless outdoor activities.

The cost of housing in Dayton is reasonable. Median home sale price in the metro area is below the national median. Plus, the prices of homes continue to stay the same over the years while they are spiking in other areas of the country. If you’re interested in new construction, you can also have your home designed and built to your specifications

4. Shopping, Arts, and Entertainment Options

There are a lot of options in Dayton if you’re looking for something new to do for a family outing or a date night. The Oregon District is the perfect place to head to if you want to enjoy a meal while doing some shopping. One of the oldest neighborhoods in Dayton dating back to the 19th century, Oregon District is full of shops, galleries, bars, and restaurants. Almost all the businesses are locally owned and operated as well.

Do you love performing arts? The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (DPAA) features the Dayton Ballet, the Dayton Opera, and the Dayton Philharmonic. If you’re not able to attend one of their live performances, they offer some virtual streams for free for all viewers, with more available if you become a member of the DPAA.

5. Weather for Every Season

Dayton gives you every season of weather. It is one of the most comfortable cities weather-wise in Ohio. Snow and freezing temperatures start in late October and last until spring. This type of weather is perfect if you and your family enjoy winter activities, such as ice skating and ice hockey.

The summers do get quite warm, with temperatures peaking around 92 degrees. They can be humid, but with the Great Miami River right in town, along with other water activities, it gives you all the more reason to take the family out and enjoy what Dayton has to offer. You can expect the most pleasant weather months in September, June, and May. Bask in temperatures of about 80 degrees as you enjoy an outdoor concert.
